Plumbing and beam layouts didn’t allow the original bathroom design to work, so the team collaborated with the architect and swapped the bathroom and closet. We’re considering swapping drywall for a ¼-inch Hardie backer to create the right depth before tile goes in. This entire bath is getting wrapped in tile, plus an artistic linear accent that’ll really make the edges pop. Small adjustments now = a cleaner, intentional finish later. They’re just placeholders while we build, and soon they’ll be replaced with floating stairs rising through this vestibule. To make this modern, open second floor work, we needed steel beams, more than the house next door ever required. Some of these are what we call “suicide beams,” which can’t be set until the concrete is fully poured to anchor the posts.
